Wellington - Three people escaped serious injury Friday when their light plane crashed as it came in to land at the tourist resort township of Fox Glacier on New Zealand's South Island, news reports said.

The pilot was briefly trapped in the plane after it hit the ground, but emergency services personnel soon freed him.

He and his two passengers were flown to Greymouth Hospital with what officials described as non-life threatening injuries, Radio New Zealand reported. dpa
