GM Signs Deal To Set Up Engine Plant In India

A new engine plant will soon start with its process of construction in Talegaon, in the GM Signs Deal To Set Up Engine Plant In Indiawestern state of Maharashtra, as General Motors today signed an agreement regarding building it. The agreement was signed in presence of the Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh and host of other dignitaries, between GM India President and Managing Director Mr. Karl Slym and Mr. A.M. Khan, Principal Secretary (Industries).

It is being estimated that the initial investment of the pant may exceed $200 million. Prior to this investment, an additional $300 million has already been invested regarding the facility, to manufacture vehicles. The annual production capacity of the Engine plant is estimated about 160,000 engines. This further could be enhanced to 300,000 engines per year. This new engine plant will give employment to around 1400 people. However, the requirement of the employees may go up or down as per the demand of the plant.

Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh announced on this occasion, “We are indeed proud and privileged to have General Motors in our state. The presence of GM in our state once again demonstrates the strengths of Maharashtra as a leading investment destination.” He also added that GM will be fully supported by the state, to make it successful.

During his speech, Mr Karl Slym informed, “The new engine facility demonstrates GM’s commitment to India. We cannot remain a global industry leader without a strong presence in the high-growth market of India. This will enable us to capture more opportunities in one of the fastest-growing vehicle markets in the world.”

He further reported, “The Talegaon engine facility is an important component of GM’s global strategy to establish a strong presence in this market. This is just one of a number of investments, totaling more than $ 1 billion that GM has made over the course of the last few years in emerging markets around the world such as China, Korea, Russia and India. The decision to build the engine facility also in India further demonstrates GM’s confidence in our future and our commitment to growing the business all across the globe.”

It is being hoped that by Q1 of 20110, this project would be completed. The GM’s production facilities in Talegaon and Halol will be complemented through this plant. These two centers build vehicles in different segments. To add more, the already existing Bangalore GM India Technical Center performs various tasks such as engineering, design, research and development activities for local, regional and global requirements.
