E-cigarettes can lead to nicotine addiction in teens
E-cigarettes can lead to nicotine addiction in teens, showed a new research. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of South California, saw 10% of teens using personal vaporizers. The study found that habit of smoking was highly likely to be taken up by these smokers.
Trend of smoking regular cigarettes was not seen in 40% of the teenagers who used vaporizers. What is really worrying about e-cigarettes is the fact that not only those who want to quit smoking traditional cigarettes are increasingly using them, but those who have never smoked before as well.
Many teenagers now feel that it's perfectly all right to smoke e-cigarettes as they are socially acceptable and cause no harm to health.
As per Jessica Barrington-Trimis, lead author of this study, the normalization of e-cigarettes could take place because social environments surrounding them are positive.
For the study, the researchers collected & analyzed data collected from more than 2000 11th & 12th graders from Southern California. .
The study has given a clarion message that teens are more likely to start vaping if their family members and friends think e-cigarettes are socially acceptable.
"There is a lot of concern by the public health community that e-cigarettes may be recruiting a whole new group of people who never smoked cigarettes. Our findings really suggest there's a lot of kids who are using these e- cigarettes", said Barrington.
Previous studies have also showed a link between e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes.
