April Marks Hubble Space Telescope’s 25th Anniversary

NASA has released a video titled 'Expect the Unexpected'. The video is the third in a series of videos celebrating Hubble Telescope's 25th anniversary. The novel video has shown some of the biggest mysteries of the universe and much more.

This month marks as the 25th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope. The telescope has been built by NASA with the help from ESA. The telescope has been named after American astronomer Edwin Hubble. His observations unveiled that the universe is expanding.

As per a data, the Hubble has made more than one million observations to a distance of 13.4 billion light years. In 2002, Hubble was fitted with the powerful Advanced Camera for Surveys. Hubble was used to find out 25 more supernovae whose light has been travelling for more than billions of years.

Mario Livio, astrophysicist at STScI, was of the view that Hubble has shown that at the center of every galaxy, there is a super massive black hole. "It also has shown us that there is a relation between the mass of the black hole and the mass of the bulge of stars around the galaxy", affirmed Livio.

The video has also shown Hubble research on exoplanets and its search for exoplanet biosignatures. L. Drake Deming, professor of astronomy at the University of Maryland, College Park, shared that it was the Hubble that detected an atmosphere of an extrasolar planet.

It made the detection by looking through the atmosphere and also by finding out sodium absorption. Overall cost of constructing, launching and running Hubble has now reached $10 billion. But officials said that the telescope has made so many discoveries than initially being thought.

The Hubble has provided us with amazing collection of photos of young and dying stars and their associated nebulae and also of vast spiral galaxies akin to Milky Way.
