Helen affects 70K people, causes crop damages of Rs 994.26 lakhCyclone Helen killed at least four people, nineteen animals, and caused widespread harm to paddy crops in the East Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, District Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad confirmed.

Hundred of villages in the East and West Godavari districts and the Krishna district also suffered severe damages of coconut plantations. More than 70,000 people in 96 villages were badly affected in the East Godavari district alone.

While the calamity caused crop damages of around Rs 994.26 lakh; nearly 3,300 people, who were residing in low-lying areas, were forced to shift to seventeen relief camps.

The cyclone has caused an estimated loss of Rs 3.15 crore to the fisheries sector in East Godavari district.

While the government is claiming that it has done the best to provide aid to the cyclone-hit people, victims are complaining that government aid is always irregular and delayed.

Bh. Ramachandra Murthy, a cultivator from East Godavari district's Thondangi mandal, said, "Cyclones are quite regular and frequent in the coastal areas, but the aid is always irregular and delayed."

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Commissioner has issued a warning that the state would face another cyclone dubbed 'Leher' by the 28th of November. The authorities have also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea on that date.
