Federation seeks health insurance for pensioners

Federation seeks health insurance for pensionersThe All India Federation of Pensioner's Associations has made an appeal to the Central and State governments regarding provisions for health insurance for all their employees and retirees. Their contention is that all the pensioners, regardless of whether they retired before 2006 or later, must get an equal treatment and get equal financial benefits that they deserve.

An increment to Rs. 1,000 in the pension of destitute elderly persons has also been appealed for in the State. It has been also suggested that the employees covered under Employment Provident Fund should be "reasonably revised".

Only 50 percent of the government employees get their full retirement benefits while the remaining struggle for several years going from one department to another to sort out "audit objections". Often, the retirees spend even up to 20 years in order to get their full pensions and other retirement benefits.

Retirees were urged to apply for health insurance schemes and annual checkups so that they can avoid high medical bills. In fact, employees who earn less than Rs. 72,000 per annum are eligible for treatment under the State government's Kalaignar insurance scheme. Even senior citizen employees are eligible to get special schemes at Government Hospitals and preferential treatment.
