U.S. Customs agent opens fire against a driver near Canadian borderAccording to the police, a U. S. Customs agent shot at a driver who refused to leave his van and drove through a barricade at a Canadian border crossing into Washington.

The Province has reported that the driver successfully got into the United States at the Peace Arch crossing Friday but was detained about an hour later. Officials did not release his name or nationality but said he was expected to face criminal charges.

The agent fired in an attempt to stop the van, said Mike Milne, a spokesman for U. S. Customs.

He told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp, "Anytime you have somebody that is fleeing in a vehicle, you have a few thousand pounds of metal and steel that is moving at a high rate of speed, it creates a very dangerous situation. The fortunate thing about this one is that there was no one hurt."

It was further reported that the Peace Arch crossing is 20 miles south of Vancouver on the border between British Columbia and Washington. (With Inputs from Agencies)
