Elections a victory of moderation: Musharraf
Islamabad, Feb. 23: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that the February 18 elections were a victory of democratic process and moderation in the country.
“I see the elections as victory of democratic process and moderation in Pakistan,” Musharraf said while talking to US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Congressman Michael Burgess, who called on him on Friday.
The Daily Times further quoted Musharraf as saying that the elections could prove a major stabilizing factor in Pakistan and emphasized the need for continuing with the goals of political stability, economic growth and fighting terrorism.
He also informed the American visitors about Pakistan’s comprehensive strategy to counter terrorism, which combined military action with political and socio-economic measures.
“He affirmed that Pakistan was fighting terrorism in its own interest and was pursuing the right course that needed to have a political dimension and socio-economic programme,” the Pakistan Foreign Office said in a statement.
The president appreciated US assistance to Pakistan and underscored the importance of the role of the Appropriations Committee.
Senator Hutchison is an influential member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and chairs the Republican Policy Committee in the Congress. Congressman Burgess serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Senator Hutchison and Congressman Burgess congratulated the president on holding free and fair elections and appreciated his leadership and Pakistan’s role in the fight against terrorism. (ANI)
