Gujarat government ready to pay Rs 10 Lakh to Sohrabuddin's family
The family of Sohrabuddin will get financial relief, as the Gujarat government has agreed in the Supreme Court to pay Rs10 lakh as interim ex gratia to the kin of Sohrabuddin, who was shot dead in a fake encounter in November 2005. Justice Tarun Chatterjee and Justice Aftab Alam have directed the Narendra Modi-led BJP government to deposit the amount in the court for disbursement.
Justice Alam, in the meantime, termed ex gratia very meager, seeking increase in compensation. He remarked: “Here are two persons who were killed. Don’t you think you should revise the compensation amount in the light of my observation?”
Gujarat government's counsel Mukul Rohtagi said that the government will make payments as per court’s Aug 3 order, to help the affected family. He added: “Whatever the court orders us to pay, we will honor it.”
Meanwhile, lawyer Dushyant Dave, appearing for victim’s brother Rubabuddin, said: "We accept it as we are quite desperate." He also demanded compensation for Sohrabuddin Sheikh's friend Tulsiram Prajapati, who was yet another victim of Gujarat police atrocities.
