DoT All Set To Come Up With A Separate Spectrum Body
With a view to keep an eye on all spectrum related issues and concerns, the Department of Telecom (DoT) is planning to come up with a separate spectrum management body.
It should be noted that the spectrum has been surrounded by almost all the debates in the blooming country’s telecom sector.
Now, it is discovered that DoT is all set to come up with a Spectrum Act to guarantee optimal utilization of spectrum by the service providers.
While commenting over the reorganizing the spectrum management body, a DoT paper has said: “There is at present no statute specifically designed to create the structure of rights and obligations on spectrum licences on the lines of those existing in other countries. There is also a need to constantly compare the amount of spectrum assigned to a service provider with the amount of spectrum actually used by them to ensure that the spectrum is used in an efficient manner.”
At present, the Wireless Planning Commission (WPC) is assigned with the task of supervising spectrum in the country.
In 2007, DoT had recommended to set-up a Centre for Excellence for Radio Spectrum Engineering and Management (CERSEM) for supervising spectrum management in the country.
In the other hand, telecom regulator TRAI has said that the task of managing the radio frequencies across the country should be handed over to it.
