Indian bandit shot dead after stand-off against 400 police officers
New Delhi - A dreaded Indian bandit was shot dead in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh Thursday after a 50-hour gunbattle with over 400 armed police that saw four policemen killed, a news report said.
Ghanshyam Kewat, armed with rifles and hand-grenades, was hiding in a house in a village in the Chitrakoot region, some 280 kilometres south of state capital Lucknow when police teams surrounded him on Tuesday night, the PTI news agency reported.
The criminal was killed after he tried to escape by jumping off the roof of the house under siege Thursday afternoon, the report said.
"Ghanshyam Kewat has been shot dead by the Uttar Pradesh police," state police chief Vikram Singh was quoted as saying.
Kewat killed a police constable earlier on Thursday taking the number of police personnel killed in the prolonged gunbattle to four.
Other media outlets reported that over a dozen policemen were wounded in the shoot-out for which police had to evacuate villagers in the area.
The police was carrying out searches in the village as it suspected that more bandits were hiding in the region. (dpa)
