Apollo to pay Rs 5 lakh compensation to a patient’s family

apollo hospitalApollo Hospital has been ordered by the State Consumer Commission to pay Rs 5 lakh compensation to family of Pradeep Kumar Saini who died because hospital authorities failed to take timely measures.

Pradeep Kumar Saini, 31, was admitted to the ICU of Apollo Hospital on June 23, 2003 in an unconscious state. Later that day, Saini's family was told that he was stable and would be discharged soon. However Saini died same night. Saini's death was a shock to his family. The hospital authorities took a week to give a death certificate to the victim's family which indicated according to Justice J D Kapoor, president, State Consumer Commission that "the hospital wanted to cover up the sequence of events leading to the death of the patient".

Justice Kapoor said, "It appears that the patient remained unattended for hours. The cause of his death was not the incompetency of the doctors but, the precious time lost."
