28-Year-guy undergoes ‘Epilepsy Surgery’ at the Kokilaben HospitalA 28-year-old chemical engineer by profession, suffering from epilepsy for the past seven years has been treated successfully. During this period, he received various anti-epileptic medications but, all in vain.

One day, he came to know about Kokilaben Hospital, Mumbai and decided to start treatment there. After consultation with doctors, he was hospitalized to a special monitoring room at the Kokilaben Hospital, and underwent continuous video recording with simultaneous EEG.

On the basis of both reports i.e. the Video EEG as well as MRI, it was found that a part of his brain was responsible for his uncontrolled epilepsy. On the advice of doctor, the patient agreed for brain surgery to remove this part. The operation was successful and the patient has recovered very well.

Doctors believes that a large number of people with epilepsy, who do not respond to medicines, can undergo the video EEG and MRI to find out if they can benefit with the surgery. However, the surgery is considered as safe and successful option only in select patients.

It should be noted that Kokilaben Hospital has established a centre of excellence in Neurosciences, which provides optimum care for people with various neurological and neurosurgical disorders.

The hospital is equipped with the state of the art Neuronavigation system as well India’s first 3-room Intra-Operative MRI Suite (IMRIS), which was used to ensure complete resection of the epileptogenic lesion.

In addition, the epilepsy team at the Kokilaben Hospital is committed to extend its care for epilepsy patients beyond medications and surgery, by addressing the recurring issues related to education, social issues to improve awareness and remove fears about epilepsy.

Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, situated in Mumbai, is a major social (CSR) Initiative of Reliance' ADA Group, which was inaugurated on 26th January 2009.
