Gomez keen to end lean spell as Germany go for goals

Leipzig, Germany  - Germany can expect a goal rush against minnows Liechtenstein but striker Mario Gomez warned Friday against speculating about the score.

The Germans go into the Group 4 World Cup qualifier in Leipzig on Saturday knowing their only three previous matches against Liechtenstein have garnered 23 goals.

Six months ago in Vaduz, Germany ran out 6-0 winners and should be good for another clear victory before meeting Wales in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Gomez, who has not scored for Germany in a year, starts in the absence of the injured Miroslav Klose to partner Bayern Munich's Lukas Podolski, who bagged a brace in Vaduz.

The Stuttgart striker has yet to transform his goalscoring form to the international stage. His 14 goals in the Bundesliga this season stand in marked contrast to his last 12 games for Germany without a goal - although some of the appearances were made briefly as a substitute.

"We shouldn't be speaking about a number," he said of the prospects of a German goal rush and the end of his lean run.

"We don't want a nail-biting game. We have to control and dominate this game."

Coach Joachim Loew said he was also hoping for a successful evening for Gomez.

"It hurts a coach to see when a striker has so many chances and tries so hard. One hopes for goals for him," he said.

Loew said the match was more than a warm-up ahead of the trip to Wales as Germany seek maximum points from the two games to keep nearest rivals Russia at bay.

"The players know the importance of the two games," he said.

"If the team can confirm the impression from training I have a good feeling."

Robert Enke will earn his fifth cap for Germany in goal in the qualifier and is also set to play against Wales.

Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler misses the game with a bruised elbow. Werder Bremen keeper Tim Wiese is a substitute.

Germany's last two homes games saw a 2-1 defeat to England in Berlin in November and a 1-0 loss against Norway in Dusseldorf last month. (dpa)
