New legislation prohibits smoking in presence of kids in car : B.C
B. C. new legislation prohibits smoking in the presence of children under 16. The new law will come into effect on World Health Day, April 7. The new law will allow police to stop any vehicle on suspicion of smoking in the presence of children and charge $109 fine if found guilty. Anyone refusing to pay fine will not be issued both a driver's licence and insurance. Parents are applauding this effort of government to protect children from danger of second hand smoke.
Healthy Living and Sport Minister Mary Polak said: "Any level of second-hand smoke has harmful effects on a child's health, so it's important that we protect vulnerable children who are confined in a vehicle."
"By making vehicles smoke-free for children under 16, we can help them get the best and healthiest start in life."
