Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia's hardline opposition Islamic party has called for a ban on Grammy award winner and R&B star Rihanna's concert, due to be held in the capital city next month, a party official and news reports said Wednesday.

Rihanna, whose hits include Umbrella and Disturbia, is scheduled to perform in Kuala Lumpur on February 13 as part of her Good Girl Gone Bad world tour.

However, the youth wing of Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) has called for the concert permit to be withdrawn, saying that Rihanna's performances were unsuitable due to her daring outfits, said a top party official.

Allowing the Barbados-born singer, who currently resides in the United States, to perform in mainly-Muslim Malaysia would also be a form of support for Israel, an ally of the US, said Kamaruzaman Mohamad, the youth chief.

Inviting Rihanna was "akin to insulting Eastern culture, belittling local artistes, intentionally causing losses to the country's economy and supporting Israel's war policy, which is supported by America," Kamaruzaman was quoted as saying by the Star daily.

He said the US currently supplies arms to Israel from contributions and taxes collected from Americans.

"Whether Rihanna realises it or not, we know that the taxes she has paid also contributed to the war in Gaza," Kamaruzaman said.

He said the party would submit a protest note to organisers to demand a cancellation of the concert.

The Islamic party has in the past opposed scheduled performances by numerous famous performers, including Avril Lavigne, Pussycat Dolls and Gwen Stefani. (dpa)
