New Zealander jailed 10 years for raping Dutch tourist
Wellington - A New Zealand man who admitted raping a 22-year-old Dutch tourist at a campground was jailed Thursday for 10 years.
Maakiti Joseph Tipene, 25, a wool presser, earlier admitted nine charges, including rape and burglary in an attack on the woman and her partner in the early hours of January 15 in Southland, New Zealand's southernmost region.
Judge Kevin Phillips, who imposed a non-parole period of seven years at Thursday's hearing in Invercargill, described Tipene's crimes as "unbelievably horrendous" and said they had destroyed the victims' lives and tarnished New Zealand's image as a tourist destination.
The government of the Netherlands upgraded a travel advisory to its citizens after the attack, warning of the possibility of serious crime in New Zealand. (dpa)
