Mumbai sends mixed reactions to Raj Thackeray's derogatory remarks
Mumbai, Feb 4 : Mumbai sent out mixed reactions to Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray's derogatory remarks against 'Chhat Puja' that is popular in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Thackeray has allegedly said that the traditional festival of 'Chhat Puja' is a 'drama'.
Thackeray, who is in the thick of the controversy, refuted any bias towards people from other states, and said he was only speaking against the show of political clout during such traditional festivals.
People who have migrated to Mumbai in search of jobs, in their reaction to Thackeray's comments, have felt that the entire episode is simply unwarranted.
On the other hand, many residents feel that the migrants compete with them for almost everything, including employment opportunities, denying them their first right over the resources of the State.
Many dismiss it as a political gimmick, and feel it is a vote-bank tactic, while others feel the statement might bring about a divide between Maharashtrians and immigrants from other parts of the country.
"All this is a political gimmick. The elections are just round the corner, and the parties want support. This is sheer vote bank politics. I feel, all this is wrong," said Navin, a resident.
Most of the migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in Mumbai work as auto drivers, taxi drivers, milk and vegetable vendors to earn their bread and butter. (ANI)
