MTNL launches 3G service in Mumbai

MTNL launches 3G service in MumbaiPublicly -owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) has announced that it has rolled out third generation (3G) mobile service in Mumbai.

The sources said that MTNL became the first operator to introduce third generation (3G) mobile service in the city.

The company has invested about Rs 250 crore for launching this facility and is expecting to rope in one lakh customers by March of the coming fiscal.

Through the launch of this unique 3G service, the customers of MTNL would now be able make video calls, access live TV, movie downloads, high speed Internet, a better gaming experience on mobile phones.

Mr. R S P Sinha, Chairman and Managing Director of MTNL stated in a communiqué that the company has built-up capcity to extend the service to 7.5 lakh subscribers, but due to unavailability of the required spectrum, only four lakh customers could be served.

At present, the company will launch the service in South and Central Mumbai and will soon expand it to other parts of the city including Navi Mumbai, Kalyan and Dombivali.

The sources close to the company said that MTNL has linked up with Nokia which would offer 3G handset plus connection package.
