Srinagar, Kashmir - Police in India's northern Jammu and Kashmir state recovered the body of a Norwegian skier three months after she went missing from a ski resort in the Himalayan region, officials said Tuesday.

Francesca Rongne's body was found Monday in a stream near the resort town of Gulmarg, 52 kilometres west of state capital Srinagar, local police officer Anand Jain said.

"She seemed to have died after she slipped from a cliff into a stream," said Nissar Ahmed, a tourist official who along with a few villagers was the first to spot the body in the area.

"The ski boots and clothes were intact but the body had decomposed and there was a major injury on her head," he said.

The Norwegian embassy in New Delhi was informed about the recovery of the skier's body.

Rongne, 26, had gone missing following heavy snowfall in the region on January 8.

The state tourism department and the army had mounted a massive operation, pressing ski guides, snowmobiles, helicopters and sniffer dogs to track her, but in vain.

The search was suspended later because of inclement weather and heavy snowfall in the region. (dpa)
