Merkel says legislation to take effect Friday
Berlin- Legislation on a rescue for the German banking system is to take effect Friday after being passed by both chambers of parliament, Chancellor Angela Merkel said in Berlin Monday.
The inter-bank lending market had practically come to a standstill in Germany, she said. A guarantee with a scale of 400 billion euros would help it restart, with 20 billion euros of the sum set aside in case the guarantee were called, she said. (dpa)
