PC maker Lenovo has announced the launch of two new laptops in its ThinkPad Edge series on Friday. The models target small and medium businesses in the country in order to increase market share.

Amar Babu, Managing Director of Lenovo India said, "We currently have 2-3 per cent market share of the Indian SMB segment. Our focus would be on growing in this market and a double digit market share is achievable."

The ThinkPad comes with a new sleek design and retains the essentials of the older versions. It has cleaner lines, a smooth, glossy lid, and silver accents along the edges.

The keypad of the new model comes with large keys. The touchpad is also larger and is smooth and accurate and has distinct left and right buttons both above and below the pad. The keyboard is not backlit and that makes it little difficult to use in the dark.

The ultra-portable model has a 13.3-inch screen size and is slim and light. It is powered by an ultra-low-voltage processor and gives a longer battery life. The system has an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor at 1.3GHz.

The system comes equipped with 4GB of DDR3-1066 RAM and a fairly speedy 7200 RPM hard drive. The Edge has 802.11b/g/n support along with a built-in 3G mobile broadband with GPS, and even WiMAX support.

Mr. Babu did not disclose any further details regarding the timing of the launch. He indicated that the segment of small and medium businesses offers huge opportunity for the company and it plans to launch more products in the market aimed at this segment.

Analysts estimate that the PC market in India is about 7.6 million units, 40 per cent of which comes from the small and medium businesses. The whole market is expected grow to 13.8 million units by 2013 while the share of small and medium businesses would grow to 35 per cent.

The segment is expected spend about Rs 5,275 crore in 2009 on PCs and it is expected to grow to Rs 5,515 crore in 2010.

The price of models in ThinkPad Edge Series starts at Rs 34,000 and ultraportable ThinkPad X100e come with a price tag starting at Rs 29,950.
