Lebanese MP Hariri hails Saudi king speech in Kuwait
Beirut - The head of the Lebanese majority, Member of Parliament Saad Hariri, on Monday described as "historic" a speech by Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz calling on Israel to accept a peace plan.
"The Saudi king had restored the role of Arabs and put an end to attempts to kidnap Palestine for foreign and regional interests, and had established a new phase that would help repair Arab relations," Hariri said.
Speaking at an Arab economic summit in Kuwait on Monday, the Saudi king urged Israel to accept a six-year-old, comprehensive Arab initiated peace plan, saying it "will not remain on the table forever."
The plan promises normalization of Arab relations with Israel in exchange for Israeli withdrawal from territories it has occupied since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and a "just settlement" of the Palestinian refugee question.
Hariri urged all Lebanese and Arabs to express solidarity with the Abdullah's "noble speech" and praised him for his generous support for the reconstruction of Gaza.
King Abdullah has promised 1 billion dollars in aid for Gaza.
Hariri also noted that Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak's speech in Kuwait had corrected a number of inaccuracies aimed at denigrating Egypt's status, role and historical record in supporting the cause of Palestine and its people.
Hariri also urged Palestinian factions to respond to all efforts undertaken by Mubarak in order to contribute to achieving Palestinian national reconciliation and lay a sound foundation for Palestinian unity. (dpa)
