At least 13 killed, 22 injured in train accident near Mathura
At least thirteen people were killed and 22 injured as Goa Express moving towards Delhi rammed into the stationary Mewar Express near Mathura on Wednesday morning. The engine of the Goa Express climbed on the last bogey of the Mewar Express, which was stationary on the same track. The DRM at Agra, Mr Rajendra Dutt Tripathi has confirmed the number of deaths.
Electric cutters were pressed into service to rescue a number of people trapped in bogey. Officials have not given the exact figures of the number of deaths but it is expected that the toll will rise further.
About two dozen injured passengers have been shifted to nearby private hospital but still a number of passengers are trapped in the damaged bogey. Local villagers have already reached on the spot of the accident.
On being contacted, police sources at SSP Mathura office revealed that accident occurred near Bajna bridge at about 5 am on Agra-Delhi track. Both, the Goa Express from Vasco and Mewar Express from Udaipur were to reach Hazrat Nizamuddin and were heading towards Delhi. The Mewar Express was stationary when Engine of Goa Express coming from behind mowed down the last bogey of Mewar Express.
There was rush in the train because of the end of Diwali vacation. The exact reasons of the accident are yet to be ascertained, however, the probe is to focus on error in signalling of trains on same track. Sources also indicated that abrupt chain pulling might have led to Mewar Express being stranded on the track.
Train movement on Agra-Delhi track has been badly affected. Routes of train on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai track are being changed. Trains were being diverted through Tundla railway station and Agra Fort-Bayana train track. Assistance from Palwal was moved to carry the intact bogies of both the trains.
