Johns Hopkins University Surgeons to Perform World’s Third Penile Transplant

Medical team at the Johns Hopkins University may perform a penile transplant in coming months. If it happens, it will be first penile transplant in the United States. With this transplant, the team wants to offer a life-changing opportunity to wounded military veterans.

The medical team led by Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee said the surgery will give servicemen with often-hidden wound of war a new lease on life. As per the team, it has received permission to perform about 60 transplants on veterans with injuries to their genitals.

Kate Knott, a nurse practitioner and transplant coordinator at Johns Hopkins, said, “The psychological impacts of these injuries have obviously been huge for patients. To fully restore somebody...after such a devastating injury would be pretty great”.

As per reports, the medical team has already started preparations for the transplant. It has been lining up candidates, which will undergo screening process before getting approval for the rare transplant.

So far, no medical team in the US has ever performed a penis transplant in the US. Only two such transplants have ever performed in the world till now. China was the first to perform a penis transplant in 2006. It was a failed attempt. Second was performed in South Africa in 2014. The transplant of 21-year-old guy was considered success when his girlfriend was reported to be pregnant.

According to Knott, the wounded veterans often sustained many types of injuries and injuries to genitals are some of them. The transplant will open new doors in the arena.
