It is not RBI’s job to help banks achieve targets: Deputy Governor says
It is not Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) job to help banks achieve their targets, the central bank's Deputy Governor K C Chakrabarty said.
Some banks have expressed their concerns over meeting the new priority sector target, saying it would be difficult to achieve. They are seeking more time from the central bank to achieve the new priority sector target.
Speaking on the topic in a recent interview, Mr. Chakrabarty said, "Our job is not to help banks achieve their targets. Our job is to look at the lower category borrowers, who find it difficult to get credit."
Mr. Chakrabarty added that banks would be pressurized to pass the pressure on to their local officials to hit those targets, and the branch manager would then offer loans to those lower category borrowers.
He stressed that whatever the central bank did about the interest rates was in the interest of the economy. He said everyone would have to play one's part and produce more because there was no other way to tackle inflation occurring due to supply-side constraints.
Mr. Chakrabarty also said that the central bank would be satisfied with banks' performance if the customer is satisfied, and thus banks were constantly being advised to improve.
