HP revises the first quarter earnings following legal charges

HP revises the first quarter earnings following legal chargesHewlett Packard Co. revised its first quarter results following the legal expenses related to a lawsuit involving Electronic Data Systems. The company acquired EDS in 2008.

In an announcement, the company said that the lawsuit charges impacted negatively on the first quarter earnings and the Q1 profit was decreased by $73 million or 3 cents per share.

Hewlett Packard reported the revised net income for the first quarter of $2.25 billion or 93 cents a share, while on February 17, the company reported net income of $2.32 billion or 96 cents a share. The adjusted net income for the quarter ended January 31 has been revised to $2.59 billion or $1.07 a share from previously reported adjusted net income of $2.67 billion or $1.10 per share.

Recently, EDS was ordered to pay about $112 million to British Sky Broadcasting Limited. Also in February 2010, HP has been ordered to pay $320 million to the same company and this $112 million is to be paid in addition to the previously paid amount. EDS was found liable in some areas in the hearing by the court.
