London, April 5 : People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the animal rights group famous for its ''I''d rather go naked than wear fur'' campaigns, has come under fire for killing animals at its US headquarters.
The group''s stunts have made it one of the most formidable global lobbyists against the exploitation of animals.
However, now the high-profile charity has come under fire over its own treatment of animals after it emerged that the organisation put down 96 per cent of the animals handed into its American headquarters.
Washington, Apr 5: Finnish researchers have found that development of allergy might be tied to malfunction of the respiratory epithelium, which allows allergens to bind to, enter and travel through the epithelium.
Previous studies had revealed a vital role of epithelium as the first line of defense against allergens.
In the new study, the researchers aimed to clarify what happens in the epithelium immediately after allergen exposure, before the allergic reaction develops.
They used birch pollen allergen (Bet v 1) exposure and showed that this allergen binds to, enters and travels through conjunctival and nasal epithelium of allergic patients but not of healthy subjects within one minute after the exposure.
The frequent launches of space rockets are harming the protective ozone layer of Earth - that's what the US atmospheric researchers have warned in their recent study. The scientists have cautioned and advised that the space missions should be restricted as rocket launches are damaging the stratospheric ozone layer.
London, Apr 4 : Want to be good at golf? Well, try not to concentrate too much on the game, suggests a new study.
Researchers have found that the secret to a good putt is to stop worrying about stance, distances and the lie of the green and simply hit the ball.
John Toner, from University College, Dublin, who carried out the research, said: "When people feel under pressure they start to focus more on their technique, but this study shows that is exactly what they should not do.
Washington, April 4 : Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Chicago have identified a novel compound that primes a plant's immune system, which may lead to the development of disease-resistant plants.
The team, which includes Tim Tschaplinski of the Department of Energy's ORNL, has determined that azelaic acid has a role in priming the immunity response in Arabidopsis, a small flowering plant related to cabbage and mustard.
Paris, April 4 : A meticulous analysis of data has allowed astronomers to investigate the initial phases of a giant stellar explosion, which led to the ejection of matter at velocities close to the speed of light.
On 19 December 2004, the blast from an exploding star arrived at Earth.
ESA's (European Space Agency's) Integral satellite, an orbiting gamma-ray observatory, recorded the entire event, providing information for what may prove to be one of the most important gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) seen in recent years.
