Freeway speed cameras to be ended by Arizona
According to the official reports, Arizona's Department of Public Safety has moved to end the state's speed-camera program on freeways by July.
The Arizona Republic has reported that the department sent a letter this week to Redflex Traffic Systems, the operator of the cameras, telling the company its contract would not be renewed.
It was further reported that Gov. Jan Brewer has criticized the revenue-generating aspect of the program since she was secretary of state.
Janet Napolitano included the program in the 2009 budget when she was governor, projecting annual revenues of $100 million from the citations.
The report also noted that the 78 fixed and mobile cameras monitoring freeways around the state have sparked vandalism and violence in their two years of operation and will be shut down after July 15. (With Inputs from Agencies)
