Five people killed in landslide in southern Philippines
Davao City, Philippines - Five people, including three children, were killed in a landslide in the southern Philippines, police and local officials said Friday.
The victims were residents of a remote village in the gold-rush town of Monkayo in Compostela Valley province, 930 kilometres south of Manila.
Josephine Frasco, a provincial social welfare officer, said the landslide occurred on Thursday after days of heavy rain in the province.
She said the landslide buried an undetermined number of houses in the village of Upper Ulip.
It was the second landslide in the town on Thursday. In the first landslide, nine people were rescued alive and suffered only minor injuries from the avalanche of mud and debris.
Senior Superintendent Ronald Dela Rosa, provincial police director, said the children who were killed in the second landslide were siblings aged 6, 7 and 11.
"The children were resting inside their house when the incident happened," he said.
The two other victims - two adult males - were hit by the landslide outside their homes.
Monkayo is at the foot of Mount Diwata, a gold-rush site where hundreds of small-scale miners have set up makeshift operations that have become prone to various accidents. (dpa)
