Fiji downs New Zealand in last World Cup qualifier
Wellington - Fiji embarrassed visiting New Zealand with a 2-0 win in Oceania's final World Cup qualifier on Wednesday night.
It was the New Zealanders' first defeat after five wins in the Oceania Nations Cup had already qualified them for the Confederations Cup in South Africa in June 2009 and a World Cup playoff against an Asian team later next year.
Both goals in Lautoka, Fiji, came in the second half after New Zealand goalkeeper Glen Moss was sent off in the 59th minute for questioning a decision of referee Lencie Fred, reducing the visitors to 10 men.
Coach Rickie Herbert had to pull out striker Greg Draper and send in Jacob Spoonley to man the goal and Fiji striker Roy Krishna, who plays in New Zealand for Waitakere United, scored four minutes later.
He notched another in the 89th minute to send packing the red-faced New Zealanders, who had flown to Fiji looking for another win to lift their world ranking and make them an attractive proposition for friendly matches against Asian sides as a tough lead up to the Confederations Cup.
Herbert fielded one of the youngest national sides ever, choosing not to summons any of his caps who play in Europe and the United States, in favour of blooding a number of youngsters.
The match counted as a home fixture for the New Zealanders after FIFA refused to allow it to be played in New Zealand last year when the government refused to grant an entry visa to Fiji's goalkeeper because of his family links to the military which run the country after toppling the elected government in December 2006.
