Paris  - Roger Federer is keeping focus as he heads into the business end of the ATP season, with solid performances laying the groundwork for what he hopes in a return to world-class wins in 2009.

The Swiss claimed his home Swiss Indoors in Basle for the third time at the weekend before making a late confirmation of his entry into the Paris Masters.

He then leaves early next week for Shanghai to defend his title in the season-ending Masters Cup.

Though he owns just one Grand Slam title (US Open) and none from the Masters so far in 2008, that's not bothering the steady Swiss.

With four titles to the eight of Rafael Nadal, Federer thinks his chase to regain number one status next season might actually be less stressful.

"It's an easier season than the years before, because I have less to defend - that's the only positive I see, really," he said.

"I'm happy with the way things have gone this season after a rough start and a rough Wimbledon final."

Federer, holder of 57 trophies, suffered with glandular fever in December and January, a medical problem which put him on the back foot for more than six months, even though he played through it.

"I felt well in Madrid, played great in Basel as well" he said. "I've really been able to turn around get some emotional wins with the Olympic (doubles) gold and Basle again and then the US Open." (dpa)
