ESL to conduct randomized Skin tests for Performance-Enhancing Drugs

Electronic Sports League, video-gaming organization, has announced it will start testing players for whether or not they have taken performance-enhancing drugs. From August, the company would administer skin tests for the drugs at its ESL One Cologne event in Germany.

The announcement has come at a time when a player has confessed that he has taken the stimulant Adderall at a tournament. The tournament, where the test will be done is a first-person shooting game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and the winner in the game will receive US$250,000.

The organization has affirmed that it will join hands with the World Anti-Doping Agency and Germany's anti-doping agency. With their help, the ESL will develop a policy and once the policy is devised then it will carry out tests at its major events.

Players have been banned from using drugs and alcohol at events. But it will be the first time that cyber athletes will be checked. “The growing visibility and popularity of eSports, as well as increasing prize pools make it not only more tempting for teams and players to break the rules, but also more damaging to our sport as a whole when they do”, said the ESL.

It also affirmed that the company has commitment to protect the integrity of its competitions and to provide equal competition opportunity to every player. The ESL is the world’s largest gaming organization having more than five million registered league participants.
