Driver held for stealing jewels worth Rs1.62L

The police at Shivaji Park have arrested Nasir Khan, 29, a tourist car driver, on Thursday for the alleged stealing of diamond and gold ornaments collectively valued at Rs1.62 lakh. The ornaments belong to a retired police inspector and were stolen after his son's wedding reception.

Retired senior police inspector Ashok Khedekar, 61, a resident of Shivaji Park, hired two Innova cars on February 14 to ferry his family, relatives and his son Sameer, the groom, from his house to Crystal Spring Hall at Bandra (West) where the wedding reception was being held. After the reception was over at around 11.30 pm, they kept the gifts in one car while a bag containing diamonds and gold ornaments were kept in the other car.

When they returned home, Khedekar found the bag containing the ornaments missing from the car's dickey. After failing to find the missing bag, Khedekar lodged a complaint with the police on February 26 and said he suspected the car's driver, Nasir Khan.

Police inspector Vinay Kulkarni said Nasir Khan, had confessed to the crime and the stolen ornaments were recovered from his Vikhroli Park site home. Khan has been remanded in police custody till March 2.
