Don’t Worry about Earth’s Magnetic Field, It won’t Flip Soon

Researchers have outlined in a new study that earth’s magnetic field will not flip its polarity any time soon. A catastrophic flip of the magnetic poles will not happen at least for 1,000 years, the study indicated.

A research in past suggested that weakness in intensity of planet’s geomagnetic field was observed. This weakness could mean that our home planet’s magnetic poles could flip in near future, as per the previous research. It also indicated that the geomagnetic field’s strength has been fading from last 200 years.

As per the new study by Columbia University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers, there is no reason to worry. The planet’s magnetic poles are not going to flip as intensify of the geomagnetic field is strong, the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggested.

After the past research’s release, some scientists started wondering if earth’s polarity could flip. It was a matter of worry as the magnetic field protects earth from dangerous cosmic rays and solar radiations. If the geomagnetic field starts fading, its effects will be observed on creatures living on the planet. There will be an increase in harmful solar radiations, which could lead to serious health outcomes. Some experts think harmful solar radiations could even lead to mass extinctions.

As per the new study, “Even though the magnetic field is dropping fast, the current field intensity has a long way to fall before reaching an unstable level that would lead to a setback”.
