Considered to be Extinct Australian Night Parrot captured
As a part of project that aims to protect the remaining ground-dwelling birds, an Australian Night Parrot has been captured. It is quite an important find because the world's most mysterious bird was considered to be extinct for around 100 years.
The night parrot has not been captured since the 1980s and many experts have thought that the species have gone extinct. Ornithologist John Young said that in 2013, they have captured a few not-so clear images of the night parrot. Young said that after an 18-month search, they have captured one of the birds on April 4.
Researchers then took feather samples from the bird. They even fitted a small tracker with a battery on one its legs to know about the bird and its habits. Rob Murphy, executive manager of conservation group Bush Heritage Australia, was of the view, "It's fantastic to have this bird, which is such an enigmatic creature. When you talk to bird lovers, this is the Holy Grail. It's like finding a thylacine".
Before finding the bird and conducting the research, they were not having any idea what did they eat. The area of south-west Queensland, where the species was found is now a protected area, as the property has been purchased by Bush Heritage Australia.
For now, it is not known how many birds are remaining. Murphy said that the bird is quite a rare one, would attract some well meaning people as well as poachers. In order to gain better idea of how many night parrots are remaining in the area, around 30 remote cameras have been set up.
