Chinese envoy condemns attack on Sri Lankan cricketers

Chinese envoy condemns attack on Sri Lankan cricketersNew Delhi, Mar. 4 (ANI): China's Ambassador to India Zhang Yan on Wednesday condemned Tuesday's attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.

Speaking to reporters here on the sidelines of an event, Ambassador Yan urged the world community to come together to fight the menace of terrorism.

"We are opposing any terrorist action. .all countries should work together to fight against all forms of terrorists," said Yan.

Seven members of the Sri Lankan cricket team were wounded and six policemen were killed when around a dozen gunmen attacked their convoy at the Liberty Circle roundabout near Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.

A gunmen attacked with rifles, grenades and rockets, wounding six players, a British coach and killing at least eight Pakistanis .

The broad daylight ambush shows how easy it can be for armed groups to grab world headlines with terrifying acts of violence and the brazen tactics may trigger copycat attempts among militants in other continents, analysts say.

Pakistan has reeled under a wave of bomb and gun attacks in recent years, mostly carried out by Islamist militants linked to the Taliban or Al -Qaeda. But arch nationalists would relish a link being found between rival India and the Lahore attack.

The incident had echoes of an attack on the Indian city of Mumbai last November in which around 170 people were killed and which led to the Indian cricket team canceling its planned tour of Pakistan, and a Sri Lankan team taking its place.

China enjoys very good relations with Pakistan and is seen as a key ally of Islamabad on the world stage. (ANI)
