Change in climate may happen without warning: Study
A new study by the University of California in Davis has claimed that climate change may occur without warning while making it harder to identify the tipping points that may lead to irreparable damage to the ecology.
Many scientists are looking for such tipping points to access the probable damages that could cause in order to reverse those changes and prepare for them in a better manner. However, the researchers have said that these changes may occur without a warning.
Alan Hastings, the Author of the study and a professor in University of California -Davis' Department of Environmental Science and Policy said at a press release "It is harder than thought to predict when sudden shifts in earth's natural systems will occur. Our new study found, unfortunately, that regime shifts with potentially large consequences can happen without warning systems can tip precipitously."
He further indicated that the some of the effects of the climate change can only be seen if they happen to be dramatic. This has made reversing the trend even harder.
Mr. Hastings is a renowned ecological forecaster and an expert for using mathematical models to understand natural systems. The study focused on models from ecology. The findings of the study are also relevant for other systems as well.
He has received the Robert H. MacArthur Award in 2006, which is the highest honor given by the Ecological Society of America.
