Sunday, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) informed more than 6,500 students re-appeared for the computer-based Common Admission Test (CAT) as the technical problems didn't let them take the test last year.

S Roy, head of Prometric India that conducted the first ever online version of CAT, informed about the smooth and successful conclusion of the phase two.

It was from Nov 28 to Dec 8, 2009 when the first phase of CAT 2009 was carried out.

However, due to technical faults, thousands of candidates failed to take the test. Due to this, the country's premier IIMs had to conduct a second phase test on Jan 30-31.

On Sunday, more than 26 centres across the country saw the conduction of the test, the results of which would be out in the third week of February.

In 2009, a total of 241,000 students had applied for CAT. But, the first phase saw nearly 216,000 appearing for the test.

Virus attacks and some hardware problems were blamed by both IIMs and Prometric, the US headquartered firm for the bad beginning of online CAT.

As of now, there are seven IIMs at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Shillong. During the coming academic year, minimum of four new IIMs are predicted to start. A student needs to clear CAT if he wants to get into any of these reputed B-Schools. CAT scorecard is also the basis for admission in some other institutes.
