Berlin close to identifying two Germans killed in Mumbai

Germany FlagBerlin - German police pathologists are close to identifying the remaining two of the three Germans killed in last week's Mumbai attacks, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Tuesday.

India has already said three died, but Germany normally declines to say someone has died in a disaster until it has unquestionable proof.

Ralph Burkei, a Munich television executive, died from injuries he suffered in a fall as he attempted to escape down the facade of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

A newspaper, Neue Rheinzeitung, said the other two were believed to be a 68-year-man and his wife from Goch near the Dutch border who had been on holiday in Mumbai.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said evidence that the other two dead listed by India were in fact German people was mounting but was not yet conclusive. The police pathologists were sent to India to inspect the bodies.

India says the 188 people killed in the terrorist attack included 28 non-Indians. (dpa)
