Belgian police examining reported Maddie sighting

Belgian-policeBrussels - Police in Belgium are examining CCTV footage from a Brussels bank which is said to show a child similar to missing British toddler Madeleine McCann, the Belga news agency reported Saturday.

A security guard said he saw an English-speaking blonde girl of five or six years accompanied by a woman, police spokesman John Berckmans said.

Berckmans said the criminal police laboratory was investigating the pictures to see whether they are of sufficient quality for an identification.

The footage was taken Monday in a bank branch in the Brussels district of Molenbeek.

"We're handling this like other reports and tips," the police spokesman said.

Madeleine, who was four when she disappeared from her parents' holiday apartment in Portugal in May 2007, could have been abducted "to order" for a Belgian paedophile ring, Portuguese police files published this week suggested.

Belgian police said they have received more than 100 tips relating to Maddie and 30 would be investigated further.

A suspected sighting of Maddie in a Belgian cafe in summer 2007 turned out to have been mistaken. (dpa)
