Aus Open 2009: Sania Bows Out
Here’s sad news for the Indian fans.
Sania Mirza bowed out of the singles event at the Australian Open singles event as the Indian teenager went down in straight sets to Russia’s Nadia Petrova.
Sania failed to reproduce her round one form, where she defeated Marta Domachowhska 6-1, 6-4.
Sania Mirza crashed out singles event following a 3-6, 2-6 second round loss to World number 10 Petrova, thus bringing down the curtains on India's singles challenge in the process. The 10th seed Petrova took just 70 minutes to beat the 22-year-old Indian girl from Hyderabad.
Sania thus failed to better her 2005 show at the Melbourne Park, where she had reached the third round before losing to eventual champion Serena Williams.
Though the Indian lost the match but said that she was relieved to be back on the court after being out for months due to a career-threatening wrist injury.
After losing the match, a disappointed Sania said, “I’m just happy to be back and doing what I love doing, playing tennis and competing. There was a big crowd out there and I haven't played like that for six months,” she said. “Of course, I'm disappointed at losing but I will try and take positives from this. I will try and get into the top 30, of course, but the last five or six months have taught me to live for the moment so I don’t want to get ahead of myself.”
In this tournament, Sania is solo representative in the singles for India. Both Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi will play the men's doubles with their respective partners. Also in battle would be Rohan Bopanna, who has teamed up with Finnish Jarko Nieminen.
