Afghan road crash leaves 4 U.K. soldiers dead
Britain's defense ministry said on Thursday that four British soldiers were killed in a collision in Afghanistan that submerged their armored truck underwater.
The ministry also revealed that the Wednesday night accident occurred near Gereshk, a town in Helmand Province on the Helmand River in central Afghanistan about 75 miles northwest of Kandahar.
According to spokesman Lt. Col. James Carr-Smith, the soldiers "were part of a team that was traveling to assist in an incident at a nearby checkpoint" when their Ridgback Protected Patrol Vehicle, a British version of the Cougar armored fighting vehicle, veered off the road and became submerged underwater.
Three of them were from the 1st Battalion of Britain's Mercian Regiment and the other was from the 1st Battalion of Britain's Yorkshire Regiment, one of the largest infantry regiments of the British Army, though the name of the soldiers were not released.
The Times of London also reported that the soldiers' families were informed and asked for a period of grace before more details are released.
According to the ministry officials, the military has begun an inquiry to determine what happened, but the accident involved no enemy action. It further added that no civilians were injured. (With Inputs from Agencies)
