Abbas: Positive signs from US on two-state solution
Ramallah - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday that he has seen positive signs from United States officials regarding the two-state solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Speaking at a press conference with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Abbas said that "we have heard positive signals from US President (Barack) Obama, Secretary of State (Hillary) Clinton and from (special US envoy George) Mitchell on this vision."
He said that "the vision of two states is the base for a solution and which should be applied as soon as possible."
Abbas said he will discuss this vision and the peace process with Obama when he meets him in Washington on May 28.
"Our agenda with President Obama will be the peace process, the two-state vision and comprehensive peace," said Abbas.
The Chinese foreign minister said his country supports the two-state solution.
"We want to see an independent Palestinian state as soon as possible because this enhances peace in the region," he said.
The two sides signed an agreement in which China will provide the Palestinian Authority with 4 million US dollars, half of which will go to rebuild schools in the Gaza Strip destroyed in the 22-day Israeli military assault earlier this year. (dpa)
