The housing plans for the city’s Parsi-Irani community will soon take off.

On completing one year since the new trustees took charge, the Bombay Parsi Punchayet on Sunday said the Rs 450 crore project would, in the next few years, see the construction of 2,275 new flats across six baugs in Mumbai.

“The 2,275 proposed flats would be two-bedroom flats with all facilities like a crèche, medical facilities and also a recreation centre for senior citizens,” said Dinshaw Mehta, chairman.

Mehta told the 2,500-odd strong community members assembled at the Dadar Parsi Gymkhana that for the 375 new flats at Panthaky Baug, Andheri an architect has been appointed and the complex will have a swimming pool, agiary and a gymnasium.

The transit accommodation for the first 100 flats to be redeveloped at Bharucha Baug, Andheri, will also start soon. “Meetings with committee members and residents of Nawroz Baug at Lal Baug, Neville Baug, Goregaon and Dadar Parsi Colony will also commence,” said Mehta.

With the Punchayet’s present Rs 100 crore corpus, the trustees said the one-third of 2,275 flats will be sold on ownership basis at Rs 2,400 per sq feet. The remaining 1, 475 flats will be given free to the poor meritorious applications on the waiting list.

The 300-year-old BPP, considered the largest private landlord in Mumbai, has almost 5,000 flats under its control.

Since the last few years, the Punchayet’s housing policy has been mired in controversy over irregularities in allotment of flats. The Punchayet, on the other hand, allege that certain people within the community are trying to tarnish their image.

Besides apprising the community of the housing project, the announcement of the Zoroastrian Youth Network Group that is meant to be a social networking group for anyone between ages of 15 to 40. The idea is to get young Parsis to bond and form friendship ties as well as community service.

Meanwhile, the Punchayet also unveiled a new logo.

The 25-year-old logo symbolising the Fire has been changed to the Winged Bull that embodies strength in the physical world, consciousness and spirituality.
