13 killed, several injured in Kolkata fire, TMC targets Left
Kolkata, Feb 27 : At least 13 persons have been killed and several others sustained serious burns when a major fire engulfed a six-storey market complex in central Kolkata''s Sealdah area early on Wednesday.
Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purakayastha said that the rescue operations are still on.
"The rescue operations are on. We have information that 13 people have died so far," he said.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and West Bengal Fire Services Minister Javed Khan said that 11 people have been rescued so far.
"This is an illegal market, which came up during the Left Front Government," he said.
According to reports, the rescue workers are evacuating people trapped in the blaze that broke out at 3:50 am in Surya Sen market in Sealdah.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
At least 18 fire brigade teams were rushed to the spot to douse the fire. The fire department officials fought the blaze for nearly three hours to bring it under control.
A victim, Ayandrali Dutta said that her entire office was destroyed in the fire.
"My entire office on the first floor has been burnt. All my files and all my accounts have been burnt," said Dutta. (ANI)
