12-year-old girl who lost her left arm to shark bite moves to Charlotte hospital for rehab
A 12-year-old girl lost her arm last month after being bitten by a shark off Oak Island. She has now been transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte from N.C. Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill. She has been moved to the Charlotte hospital to complete an inpatient rehabilitation program.
The shark had also bitten Kiersten Yow of Asheboro in the leg on June 14. Her doctor, surgeon Bill Adamson, said in a statement on Monday that Yow has recovered really well. “With the skin grafts sufficiently healed, she was permitted to begin walking with assistance again on July 8. Already she is walking under her own power, increasing in both strength and distance each day”, said Adamson.
Adamson said Yow has recovered so well because of her care team and Yow herself. Adamson said that there are no limits for Yow as she is a very independent and motivated lady to make things possible that most people struggle with.
Adamson said her determination and positive attitude has helped her make progress. Kiersten’s parents, Laurie and Brian Yow, said Monday was the 30th day they were living completely-changed lives.
The couple said they are still not in the position to speak publicly about what the family has gone through after their daughter lost her left arm below the elbow to the shark bite, but will certainly keep on updating the community through their Facebook page.
Adamson said that Yow started walking with assistance on July 8 and now, she is able to walk on her own.
