Williams fury fuels fear for Jankovic
Miami - Jelena Jankovic says she's forced to turn away in fear when muscular Serena Williams goes into attack mode, as the American did on Saturday to rescue a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 title win at the Miami Masters.
"It's like heavyweight champion and I'm a feather champion, you know? That's how I felt," said Jankovic, who saved seven match points. "I cannot match up against her.
"Just too much power for me to handle, especially on a good day where she's playing well."
But the Serb added that when Williams gets up a head of steam - complete with assorted primal screams in the heat of battle - it's not a pretty sight.
"I'm glad she was calmer and she didn't scream too much," Jankovic said of Williams, who denied that she smashed a racket on national television and earned a warning after being broken for 5-3 in the final set.
Jankovic expressed surprise that the experienced eight-time Grand Slam winner was unrecognizable at times at the delicate moments.
"Serena really had trouble closing out the match," said the 23-year-old world number four. " She looked so nervous out there.
"I could never believe that a girl who has won so many Grand Slams, so many tournaments, could be that nervous closing out the match.
"It felt like it was her first time to win that tournament. She has won it so many times."
Jankovic admitted that the Williams fury can be frightening.
"I would say, 'Oh, my God. Just hit a winner, but away from me.' I don't want to see that ball near my body or anywhere else.
"After she hits a winner, but then she screams so loud. She says, Come on. I try not to look at her. I just try to focus on myself."(dpa)
