Watch wildest show on Earth
The big migration of over 1 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 500,000 gazelle in a clockwise search for greener pastures in the African plains is considered as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
At the end of this month, huge herbivore herds, which have been grazing in Masai Mara Reserve of Kenya, make the trip south to Serengeti Park of Tanzania. During that time, it transverses crocodile-infested rivers and lion-filled lands.
After one year, the animals will be covering approximately 1,500 miles of land. They will chase the rainy season in their journey. The cyclical journey has attracted tourists and safari goers to the area for decades, however, it will be for the first time now, when the mass migration will be broadcast live online.
The team at HerdTracker, which is an app that tracks animal migrations so that safari goers can reach the right place at the right time, will be broadcasting 10- to 20-minute sessions two times a day. It will provide live takes of the striking event together with expert commentary.
The large wildebeest migration live feeds will stream on YouTube page of HerdTracker’s and through the Periscope app, playing through October 5.
According to Carel Verhoef, cofounder of HerdTracker and tourist site discoverafrica.com, the broadcasts help “those who may not be able to witness themselves the spectacular events that unfold in the Masai Mara, and to showcase to the world the specular event that happens each year in Kenya”.
“We are running out of space worldwide due to the increase in human numbers and this has an effect on everything and not just the migration,” Verhoef said. “Luckily for now, the pressure on the environment has not yet had an impact on the migration or its numbers, but development and loss of habitat and space is always a concern.”
