Volvo India to introduce trimmed variants of its luxury modelsThe Indian division of Swedish automaker Volvo Cars Corp. is mulling over plans to launch trimmed variants of one or more of its luxury models, such as sedans S60 and S80 to prop up volumes in the Indian market.

Announcing the company’s plans, Volvo Auto India’s managing director Tomas Ernberg said that some features would be removed from the luxury models to make their prices more competitive.

Speaking on the topic, Mr. Ernberg said, “We are looking at introducing stripped-down version of our luxury sedans. The corporate editions would have fewer features and may hit the Indian market in the first quarter of the next year.”

The potential trimmed versions of its luxury vehicles will help Volvo hack their prices and compete with rivals like BMW, Audi and Mercedes, more effective.

Volvo currently doesn’t manufacture cars in India. It imports cars its foreign manufacturing units, which makes its cars more expensive. The Volvo cars in India are available for with price tags ranging between Rs. 38 lakh and Rs. 55 lakh.

Luxury car market in India, which stood at around 15,000 units last year, is expected to jump by 40 per cent to hit 21,000 units in the current year.
